Hi Mary, are you referring to the General tab or the Backlog tab? On the General tab you can filter by status by using the "Issue Filter". On the Backlog tab you can exclude showing the backlog by using the "Sprints" filter.

If I'm understanding your request correctly, you'd like the ability to exclude issues in the backlog when using the General tab? In the meantime you should be able to filter by sprints to get your desired results.
